Our winery was founded in 1953 by Guglielmo Gialdi and is run today by his son, Feliciano. Originally a wine-import company, it was transformed into a wine producer in 1984 with the acquisition of an operation in northern Ticino that was already crushing and cellaring grapes from throughout the Tre Valli region (Bassa Leventina, Riviera and Blenio Valley). Thanks to the efforts of a highly qualified staff and a rapid injection of considerable capital, the winery in Bodio soon became a force to be reckoned with in the regional wine industry. From the 100,000 kg crushed in 1984, production has increased today to 900,000 kg in the cellars Bodio and Mendrisio combined. With its headquarters in Mendrisio and a branch in Bodio, our company is now one of the largest producers of wine in Ticino.
The close collaboration and mutual trust that characterizes our relationship to our many winegrowers has passed from generation to generation and finds its reward in the ever-growing number of dedicated growers who bring their grapes to our cellars. The vineyards are situated for the most part in the region of the Tre Valli, above all in the communes of Giornico, Biasca and Malvaglia. The soils of this mountainous region are largely made up of granite and gneiss, lending the wines a healthy acidity and minerality typical of their origins and contributing to their unique character and aging potential.
Steady and sizable investments in technological improvements allow us to offer our customers a vast selection of wines each with its own varietal character and distinct viticultural origins. In order to both increase and optimize our production of wines from the Mendrisiotto, 2010 saw a major enlargement of the cellars in Mendrisio. Our professional staff together with the latest technological innovation allow us to bring out the best of what nature offers us, producing high-quality wines that are the full expression of their specific viticultural origins.
While we attach the greatest importance to modern techniques and technology in the fermentation of our wines, for their aging we rely on tradition. Aging of the wines occurs in French oak barrels that lie in our centuries-old cellars dug deep into the rock at the base of Monte Generoso. Ideal atmospheric conditions of steadily cool temperatures and just the right humidity are naturally maintained and assure the quality of our prized wines.
All of our wines can be tasted and purchased in our new wine bar at the winery in Mendrisio. The Vinoteca is open Monday to Friday, from 8:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:45, and Saturday from 9.00 to 12.45.
In 2008, our guest house Le Palme was created when we renovated an old cellar in the park of our estate to receive larger groups for presentations and tastings.
